She survived 10 days of intense bombing, living without water, electricity, or heating. “I couldn’t take the cold any longer,” she says, “I was using water from the fish tank to wash.” She recorded many interviews and videos when Mariupol was under attack and making a documentary about her experiences. She knew a work contact in Winchester who offered to sponsor her when the war started, “I am the least-young member of the community here!” While she still teaches online Helen has embraced a new life in the UK, singing in a local choir, volunteering for charities, and working with the Winchester Ukrainian Association. Last December his office and workshop were destroyed. Now he’s now working part-time in a tailors. They found a sponsor in Winchester through a Facebook group, and lived with her for 9 months before moving into a rented house in the city centre. It was 5.30am on the first day of the Russian invasion. “At this time the only thing you’re thinking about is your children.” They left a few days later. “The first year was terrible because every day my daughter would say ‘I want to return to Ukraine’.” Her two children are now settled but it’s been a tough transition. She grabbed her favourite pair of high heels as they fled because they made her feel strong. As a psychologist Kate’s skills are now in high demand. He tried to join the military after the war began, but was turned away because of an old knee injury. This decision meant he was legally able to leave Ukraine, but he was still torn. His friends urged him to leave, “they said you have to go. Live your life!” A few months later he drove more than 2,800 miles from his home in Poltava to reunite with his family Winchester. A third generation blacksmith Maksym ran a successful forge in Ukraine employing ten people and supplying customers in the US and UK. He brought some of his tools from home and has built a workshop in the garden of his rented house making small items from scrap. She got separated from her family on the platform. “I could see my mum on the train as I was pushing my daughter up the steps. Then they said the train was full. I thought they weren’t going to let me in.” She eventually forced her way through and came to Winchester because she knew a former colleague living here. Mariia worked as a paediatric doctor in Ukraine and brought the stethoscope she got after graduating medical school. Her qualifications aren’t recognised in the UK so she’s working as a Healthcare Assistant at the Royal Hampshire Hospital. She isn’t sure what the future holds. “It’s difficult. I don’t know, but I understand that I’m here, and I have to do something. Like many Ukrainian children, Arina still attends Ukrainian school online. She gets up at 6am every day to study for an hour before going to her local secondary school. She’s now fluent in English, has lots of British friends, and loves drawing and performing. Milana lived near Kyiv’s main airport and had been woken up by her father in the early hours of the morning. Then they heard bombs. She spent months moving through different countries before coming to Winchester on the recommendation of a family friend. Her two favourite childhood toys travelled with her. She enrolled in college and is now studying for her A-levels. She describes hearing tanks and battles nearby. “We didn’t think that it would come to this,” she says. Their apartment building was bombed while they were home in early March 2022. “The shelling started very quickly, so we didn’t know where to run, where to hide,” remembers Anya. “It was very scary.” She escaped a few days later with her mother, two daughters and their cat Pushok. A journalist in Poland connected them to a host near Winchester, and they lived there for nearly a year before moving into their own house in the city. Anya’s been working as a kitchen assistant to support the family. “I like work, I like my job,” she says. “I was afraid to go to work, I don’t know why. I was very scared. Now, no. I met people at work, and I’m not scared anymore. It was very scary,” says Helena. “I thought I would stay with my sister, but then the children persuaded me to go.” After weeks of heavy shelling she left with her daughter, two granddaughters and their cat, Pushok. She brought a few family photographs. She misses her family but her city is now occupied by Russian forces and communication is difficult. Then we heard the explosion. When we went outside there was fire, a lot of damage. After that I decided we move.” Two years on Svitlana struggles to talk about her memories without crying. Her daughter was learning English at school so she decided to look for a UK sponsor online and found a family in Alresford through a Facebook group. An economist Svitlana brought a box of Ukrainian money with her. She says the war has left her generation no financial stability. “I know now I have no pension in Ukraine,” she says. “What can I do when I’m old. I’m worried about it. She had stayed in touch with her host family after returning to Ukraine, and when the war started they offered to sponsor her and her children. “I didn’t bring anything, just the essentials, documents,” she says. “Everything else we can replace.” Liliana is a teacher and passionate about the importance of education. “I knew I couldn’t take anything with me except my brain. We had to leave everything. This is a very important thing to understand, and that’s why I’m telling my girls that they should build up knowledge, skills, and experience, because you never know one day you might have to leave and you can’t take stuff with you.” Liliana says England is now home and she’s planning for the future. “I’m making a new life here. It took 24 hours.” When he arrived in the UK he didn’t speak any English. “It’s easy now,” he says, explaining that his favourite hobby is reading. His Master Yoda toy came with him from Ukraine. She wasn’t planning to leave Ukraine, but when she found out she was pregnant she didn’t want to risk having her baby in a bomb shelter. She joined her sister in the UK, and safely gave birth in Winchester last year. Her husband can’t leave Ukraine, so Kateryna is hoping to visit later this year so he can meet his baby daughter. After months of air raids she decided to leave. “I couldn’t just sit and wait for something,” she says. She came to Winchester because her step-sister lived nearby. A trained hairdresser, she works part-time at a local salon, but in her spare time she’s using music to bring the Ukrainian community together. We didn’t sleep. It was exhausting.” She managed her husband’s business in Ukraine and was sponsored by a UK client who lived in Winchester. “For the kids it was very challenging,” she says, recalling their arrival in the UK. “Ivan was six, and he didn’t know a word in English, but now his pronunciation is much better than ours, and we’re happy to see him talking with his friends.” Tetiana feels torn about being away from her country, but believes there are other ways they can support their homeland. “We hope that our role will come a bit later,” she says. “We will survive. A retired doctor, she is an avid gardener and grew fruits and vegetables back home in Kharkiv. Tetiana says the language has been a struggle, but it’s improving."For me its hard, communication with English people, but during one and a half years, it’s better. I understand more.” She has a few treasured photos from home, pictures of her husband who passed away before the war, and her son, who is still in Ukraine. His 10th floor flat was only 15km from the Russian border. “I was scared,” he says. “I could see the missiles in the sky. It was so close.” He had family links to Winchester and was one of the first Ukrainians to arrive in the city after the conflict started. He drove 18 hours a day for five days to reach the Polish border. “Sometimes I couldn’t see and my hands were shaking,” he remembers. He used this yellow strap to tie their luggage together and drag it across the border on foot. We could hear artillery. We were constantly having to take cover in the cellar.” Valentyna’s daughter had lived in Winchester for several years, and she and her husband stayed with her for 8 months. She’s recently set up her own catering business making varenyky, a traditional Ukrainian dumpling. These spinach and potato varenyky are served with sautéed onions and sour cream. She’s supplying a regular customer base of busy Ukrainian mums in Winchester who want to give their children a taste of home. Valentyna is torn about where she calls home.
